Here at the National Geographic Society, bees are all the buzz this Earth Month as we spotlight a few of our National Geographic Explorers who focus on the BIG impact of tiny pollinators.
Take National Geographic Explorer Felicity Muth. From her base at the University of California, Davis, Felicity is working to bring attention to the thousands of native bees that are facing extinction. Recently, Felicity and her team have documented behaviors signaling that queen bumblebees possess learning abilities that even surpass larger-brained animals in some cognitive traits and tests.
To investigate further, Muth is conducting a photographic experiment in collaboration with fellow National Geographic Explorer Anand Varma. Using 3D-printed structures, Muth’s team discovered that bumblebee nest building can involve incorporating foreign objects and completing partial structures.
Anand has also documented the mysterious 21-day transformation of a honey bee from a "maggoty-looking" larva into a complex adult – a transition usually hidden behind wax. Shining a light on this exciting process highlighted the threats facing bees, particularly the Varroa destructor mite, by showing the parasites feeding on the developing bees in unprecedented detail.
