To our village,
June arrives and with it, a kind of invitation.
To show up. To stand in. To be counted among those who believe that how we live — really live, in all its daily texture — is itself a form of activism.
At west~bourne, we talk a lot about the land. About the farmers who tend it, the soil that holds it, the systems that either deplete or restore it. But our mission has always been about people as much as it is about the planet—you cannot separate the two. A more just food system is also a more equitable one. Care for the earth and care for each other are not different causes — they're the same one.
Pride month is a reminder of that. activism isn't a hat you put on for one issue and take off for another, it's a way of moving through the world. It means showing up for bodily autonomy, for racial justice, for queer rights, for food access, for the soil under our feet — with the same intention, the same urgency, the same love.
We don't believe you can be truly planet-forward without also being people-forward. They are inseparable—and we are grateful, every June and every month, for a community that holds both.
Between the kitchen, the garden, and the market, here’s what’s inspiring us now:
Sugar snap peas are now at the farmer’s market and I can’t get enough. The best way to eat them is straight from the bag (after a quick rinse)
Stone fruit: peaches, nectarines, and apricots galore. Try making them into a galette if you’re feeling adventurous.
More specifically, figs. I’m obsessed with roasting them and adding them to a buckwheat cake with my donabe.
Basil, on everything, all the time. Add some to a slice of fresh sourdough with ripe tomatoes and a drizzle of EVAO. Perfection.
with love,
