Hello lovely lil’ Diaspora community! It is SO GOOD TO BE BACK. Our team has had a truly restful two weeks with friends and family and ungodly amounts of food, and we’re all so ready to kick this year off (so many exciting things are on my calendar in 2025—it’s looking real promising, folks)! I believe in starting a year off hella strong and in my opinion, biryani—in all its hearty goodness—makes for a solid January meal. And to make your shopping way easier, we’ve created a special Biryani Bundle featuring Biryani Masala, Kashmiri Saffron and Baraka Green Cardamom (at $5 off only until 1/12) to get you going!
I cannot tell you how many biryani-related arguments I’ve heard over the years—which meat or seafood makes the most superior biryani, the endless saga of whether vegetarian biryani is indeed biryani, potatoes in biryani yay or nay, which regional biryani is really the best (Hyderabadi, Malabari, Lucknowi, Bohri, Ambur, Chettinad?). I could go on but I’ll spare you the details to get to the point—people take biryani verrry seriously. And as hilarious and historically specific these arguments can get, to me all of it just points to the fact that this is a dish that has managed to make everyone fall in love with it.
At its core, biryani is a layered pot of aromatic, spice-laden rice cooked with hearty, marinated fillings. The word biryani is derived from the Persian word ‘birian’, meaning ‘fried before cooking’ and ‘birinj’, the Persian word for rice. Therefore, it's believed that biryani originated in Persia (or modern-day Iran) and was brought to India by the Mughals in the 16th century. 500 years later, I feel VERY proud of the Diaspora Co. Biryani Masala - a curation of 16 spices (!!!) designed to be the ideal foundation to all the regional biryani variations out there (see our guide below!), and a seasoning that can stretch far beyond rice to add big flavor to your cooking.
It’s a great way to take on a cooking project this January, that feels complicated but is actually so very easy—a wholesome achievement to kick the year off! I can’t wait to see all your delicious biryanis on my feed! Shop the Biryani Bundle here and check out all our sets and spices here.
Happy cooking and here’s to a very happy, fulfilling 2025!
