We’re officially one week out from cookbook pub day (March 3rd!!!!) and I’m honestly still pinching myself that we’ve even gotten here.
As a trio of WOC authors (Asha, Melati and me!) of a book highlighting Indian and Sri Lankan farm food, we’ve worked very hard to create a delicious archive while still being equitable translators of regionality, and complex geopolitical truths. Like a lot of what we do at Diaspora, this cookbook is big and audacious. We’re asking you to look beyond what you know about South Asian food, and into a whole world of freshness and seasonality that’s honestly criminally under-explored. We’re asking you to notice the ingenuity with which the folks who grow your spices use them. We’re telling you how to grind, bloom, toast, and layer your spices, all to unlock big, bold flavor. And we’re showing you that, contrary to popular belief, so much of South Asian cooking is actually accessible, adaptable, and easy to incorporate into your everyday recipe rotation.
In January, I travelled to visit some of our farm partners in Andhra Pradesh and Sri Lanka with a single advance copy of the book to show our farm partners and their families their recipes and beautiful selves in print. It was as full-circle as it gets, and many joyous squeals, giggles, and nods of approval were shared. After many months of being crouched over my laptop, co-writing the manuscript with Asha, finalizing the cover with our design team and publishers, and on countless zoom calls to plan our upcoming tour, the week-long trip was the best possible reminder of why we wrote this cookbook to begin with.
If you’ve ever loved what we do, I hope you will preorder our inaugural cookbook for yourself or someone you love before March 3rd. As a little thank-you, you’ll receive 20+ bonus recipes in your inbox right away in the form of our beautiful cookbook-let (an exclusive gift only if you preorder)! You can also meet Asha and I on our nationwide book tour, (full schedule here) to say hi, eat a delicious treat, and get your copy signed. I’m so excited to spend a whole month taking this cookbook out into the world and share our delicious dream with each of you! 💕
With love and in community,
Sana Javeri Kadri
