Compared to the long legacy of ancestral skin and plant knowledge, the beauty industry is a literal baby.
This is the wisdom we’ve inherited.
Vera, Marketing Cat:
In my ancestry, the Lebanese answer to just about any skin or hair woe is olive oil. Whether used as a hair mask or a skin moisturizer, it’s a deeply nourishing, time-honored remedy.
Aloe vera has been prized since ancient Egypt for its healing and soothing properties. We always had a plant in our house. Whenever anyone got a sunburn, we’d cut off a leaf, scoop out the gel, and apply it—it always made me feel witchy and magical, with instant relief. My mom also used it to tighten her skin.
Beer has been used for hair care since medieval Europe, prized for its nourishing and strengthening properties. My grandmother, inspired by Jackie Kennedy, would rinse my hair with it to make it shiny and soft. Today, we use pesticide-free, organic hops in our shampoo bar to bring those same benefits to your routine.
In Japan, kombu has been a daily ritual for health and longevity for generations. My grandfather ate it every day, and he’s now 106 years old. Inspired by him, I add a little to my tea daily as part of my morning ritual.
